LOCAL BREWS

Despite our renowned reputation for sourcing and selling ales from every corner of the U.K. we are are also keen to promote the premier breweries & distributors within our local N.E. region. Recent years have seen an enviable explosion in the quality and variety of real ale within our catchment area and we would like to take time to highlight a few of the superb independent breweries, whose products we choose to stock on a regular basis.

WYLAM - Under the steady hand of John Boyle, Wylam have been brewing since Aug 2000 and opened a brand new 20 barrel brewing facility at Heddon-on-the Wall in Aug 2006, turning out exquisite brews such as Gold Tankard (4.0), Landlord's Choice (4.6), Leighton Brau (5.0) & Haugh Porter (4.6). All new beers and many of the accomplished favourites can be sampled at Wylam's fabulous Boathouse Pub (Brewery Tap & Northumberland Pub of the Year), literally stumbling distance from the Wylam station platform. Enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that an 18G cask of Tankard can normally be found on sale at the Newcastle Arms on a home matchday. Find out more at www.wylambrew.co.uk

JARROW - The brainchild of Alison and Jess McConnell, Jarrow brewery officially opened at the site of the Robin Hood Pub, Jarrow in Autumn 2002 with their original selection of Jarrow Bitter (3.8) Joblings Swinging Gibbet (4.1) and Old Cornelius (4.8). They have since acquired The Albion (Bill Quay) & The Maltings in South Shields where a second brewing operation began in Aug 2006. Jarrow can now produce up to 100 brewers' barrels per week (that's 28,800 pints to me & you) and their diverse range of beers has extended to satisfy any palate, including our favourites Rivet Catcher (4.0) and the exceptional McConnell's Irish Stout (4.6). www.jarrowbrewery.co.uk

BIG LAMP - Credited as being the oldest micro brewery in the N.E., Big Lamp were founded in 1982 at a premises on Summerhill Street, just off the top of Westgate Road. In 1996 they relocated their brewing operation to a grade II listed Victorian water pumping station in Newburn, to the west of Newcastle. The clever blighters also opened a pub, The Keelman at the same location which still functions as the brewery tap. Big lamp Premium (5.2) and Prince Bishop (4.8) are probably what they are best known for, but look out for some top quality seasonal brews such as the B.L. Stout (4.4) and the mind-shattering Black Out (11.%). www.biglampbrewers.co.uk

HIGH HOUSE FARM - The brewery was founded in 2003 by Steven Urwin on the 200 acre family farm. High House is a non-intensive operation with a mixture of arable and livestock. After the foot and mouth episode in 2001, Steve decided to diversify into brewing after realising that the farm would not be able to sustain future generations of the family. Since the beers initial launch at the 2003 Tyneside Beer Festival, demand and praise for these traditional ales throughout the region has been very strong indeed – proof if ever it was needed, that the true beer enthusiast appreciates quality above all else. Regulars include Auld Hemp (3.8), Nel's Best (4.2) & Matfen Magic (4.8). www.highhousefarmbrewery.co.uk

DURHAMThe Durham Brewery is widely recognised as one of the flagships of our
many diverse, regional microbreweries. Established by Steve Gibbs in Aug 1994 with an original 5 barrel production site (currently 30 brewers barrels), Durham now produce an astonishing range of top quality real ale, available from the cask at selected N.E. venues and also bottled-conditioned from many others.(Beermad.org.uk list nearly 140 past and present variations). Most famous for their light, golden, bitter ales, Durham also like to surprise the connoissuer with the release of their lesser-known head spinners such as Benedictus (8.5) and their now infamous Temptation (10%). www.durham-brewery.co.uk

HIGHLAND BREWING Co. - Ok, so they may not be exactly local, but Rob Hill's beers have firmly established themselves as a regular favourite at the Arms. Rob's near-legendary delivery trips involve leaving Orkney at 6am, stopping off at a lay-by near Berwick and then dropping off (beer) at our place for last orders. The madman then
continues to a resting-spot in Greater Manchester where, after a few hours sleep he drives onwards to his final port of call in Wocester. Rob then does a swift U-turn and
legs it all the way back to the Orkneys. In the short amount of time not spent on the road, he has managed to handcraft a unique range of wonderful ales including Orkney Best (3.6), Scapa Special (4.2), St.Magnus (4.5) and the superb Orkney Blast (6.0).

HADRIAN & BORDER - The Border Brewery was set up in Berwick in 1992 on the site of the original Border Brewery which dates back to 1777. The plant changed ownership in 1994 when it was bought by the husband and wife team, Andy and Shona Burrows who went from strength to strength with regular favourites such as 'Rampart', and by 2000 were looking for premises that could accomodate a larger brewing capacity. In Oct 2000 the Hadrian & Border Brewery was formed by Shona and Andy and an ex-director of The Four Rivers Brewery. The operation
moved to the Four Rivers 20 Barrel brew-plant premises, and regulars include Farne Island (4.0), Secret Kingdom (4.3) and Centurian (4.5) where they now benefit from the expertise of Marty Hammill, known to us all from his time at
Wylam Brewery. www.hadrian-border-brewery.co.uk

CONSETT - Situated to the rear of the Grey Horse pub is the newly refurbished Consett Ale Works Brewery, one of only a handful of on-site microbreweries in the region. Previously known as the Derwent Rose Brewery, production began in June 2006 and their 3 current regular ales; Steel Town (3.8), White Hot (4.0) & Red Dust (4.5) have gone down exceptionally well with the regulars. We have also stocked the Cast Iron (4.1) and Consett Stout (4.3) and head brewer Rufus, assures us that more
quality brews are in the pipeline (pardon the pun!!) www.thegreyhorse.co.uk

ALLENDALEThe original Allendale brewery ceased brewing in 1887 and Tom & Jim's reincarnation produced its 1st brew on Feb 14th 2006. With a spanking new, 10 barrel production site at their disposal it has not taken long for them to stamp their mark on the N.E. brewing scene as serious contenders to the competition and Allendale's finely crafted beers have been given regular outings at the Newcastle Arms ever since. Their current range include Best Bitter (3.8), Golden Plover (4.0), Black Grouse Bitter (4.0), Curlews return (4.3) and the outstandingly delicious Allendale Wolf (5.5). www.allendalebrewco.co.uk

BULL LANE - Bull Lane Brewing Co. is a small, family-run microbrewery
founded by John and Joanne Taylor in 2005. Its main brewing operation is located in the cellar of the Clarendon public house (est.1753) in the Hendon district of Sunderland, and following 3 years of sustained growth they now supply a top-notch selection of ales and stouts to the Newcastle Arms and to a variety of other respected cask outlets. John's regular inventory include
T.A.G (4.2), Nowts A Matta XB (4.5) & Sauce Of The Niall (4.2) and in our opinion are certainly one to watch out for in 2008.

YORKSHIRE DALES - Yorkshire Dales Brewing Co. was set up in Oct 2005 by head brewer Rob Wiltshire. In Feb 2007, having outgrown their original premises, Rob opened a new 5-barrel plant at a converted milking parlour at Askrigg within the heart of the Dales. They supply to free-houses across the North of England and brew a diverse range of quality milds, bitters & Porters. incl Buttertubs (3.7), Ribblehead (4.3) & Whernside ESB (5.2). In 2007 Askrigg Ale (4.0) won awards at both the Cambridge Beer Festival and Leyburn Festival of Food and Drink.
